Default I have just one question (for right now)

My 21 year old stepson has enlisted in the Army. He did this without talking to anyone about it. He is set to leave for basic training on March 10. Now he is undecided about if he really wants to go or not. He said he had a friend who enlisted in the Marines and decided he didn't want to go and that was that. No problem... he just didn't go. Is this right? Can he just decide he made the wrong decision and not report for basic training with no problems? I would very much appreciate an answer to this. I have always been under the impression once you signed the papers, you belonged to Uncle Sam and that was that.

While they discourage you from backing out and make it seem like you can't get out of it because you signed something, he hasn't actually signed anything that is an obligation. He doesn't take the oath until he ships out to actual training.

Honestly, while most recruiters would have me saying this, if he doesn't feel he is ready, he shouldn't go, no sense in being miserable over a half-thought out decision.

I know a person who did just that. He decided he didn't like his contract, had second thoughts about enlisting & wanted to drop out. He had to follow procedure & go to MEPS to get his contract officially undone. All of the MEPS workers treated him like crap, kept him waiting the whole day, made snide comments about quitters & generally gave him the cold shoulder. He got out of his contract, though.

A month later he decided he wanted to go in. I washed my hands of him completely. I had received an e mail from him which I deleted before reading. I don't have the slightest interest whether he went back in or not or what he's doing. My only hope is that he got the same Recruiter & was given the crappiest contract possible.
