Thumbs down I thought that...

...the thread was called "Bundeswehr German Army". Instead it has been "my country's better than yours" and "we're a superpower and you're not- nah nah nah nah nah" for the best of 10 pages.

The info on military expenditure is seriously out of date or just plain incorrect .
U.K expenditure was $42.8 billon in 2003
Check http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html

This gives the total break down of every country in the world as of 2003 but does not give existing troop levels.

Default bundeswehr regulars

What is the size of the Bundeswehr excluding conscription .In other words how many regular troops does it have on its books?
A few years ago I saw John major inspecting some German paratroopers on parade in Germany . They looked like they could definately cause some serious mayhem if needed !

I appreciate Germans do not want to be seen as the agressors ever again . But Germany is now a modern democracy .
Do you think it is time for Germany to take a more active role in military operations abroad ,say with US or UK Armed forces or is the spectre of past history still an obstacle ?

Hello

our problem is the foretime. We soldiers have no problem to take our part at military operations all over the world, but itīs the decision of our ploiticans, that weīve to stay at home.No one would ask us.I think, germany is part of the nato as the usa,as uk an as france, and itīs time to do our stint.WW II happened 60 years ago,my grandfathers fought, but 60 years is a long time.No one talks about Stalin, who killed 20 million people in his own land or executed all 30000 polish officers in 1937.We mustnīt forget, but itīs time to look forward an work together against terrorism.

Sebastian

Sorry...but my english is not as well as yours

Your point with regard to Stalin is correct .I think you are refering to the Katyn Masscare uncovered in '43 by German occupation forces in Poland .No doubt the NKVD (Soviet Secret police ) were butchers and Stalin a monster !
I'm English and now live in Texas .The view of the French here is not good ,Primarily because of Iraq and the French refusal to consider military action against Saddams Regime .Unfortunately the Germans are seen on a political level to be in cahoots with the French .
It is my view from talking to people here that if Germany wished to contribute too operations abroad this would not be a problem .But as you say it is a political decision .Then again the German people vote for their leadership .So the ultimate decision lies with the people of Germany.
My personal belief is that Germany should take on more responsibilities abroad . This could be done if the will was there. It would have the advantage of showing Germany as a responsible world leader and therefore cast aside the ghosts of the past .

Mark

Your English is better than my German !
