The ASVAB has several different tests included (hence "battery"). Each individual test has a score. Every MOS has a different combination of scores on the various tests. One MOS might combine arithmetic with mechanical, word knowledge, & paragraph comprehension (just using these as an example) & assign a minimum score to qualify.

That's why it's best to study the total ASVAB before taking it. The higher the score the more opportunities you'll have.

More info can be found on ASVAB via Google.

Go to the ACTIVE DUTY recruiting station in your area. If you are dealing already with a National Guard or Reserve recruiter then leave and find a ACTIVE DUTY RECRUITER. Tell him what you want and what you want to do in the ARMY. He will either fulfill your request or he will offer other jobs the Army is needing. If one of those sound like what you want to do then do it. If not then wait. Remember you are in CHARGE of the process. Until you raise your right hand and take the oath you dont have to do anything you dont want to do. After you take the oath...all bets are off. 39 is not too old as long as you are in good shape. I would advise you to start running 3-5 miles a day with lots of push-ups,sit-ups, and pull-ups. The Army is in the process of changing the PT test right now and upper body strength and sprints are being looked at closely. Good luck and let us know what happens.
