Default I want to know about becoming a Paratrooper

I haven't joined the army yet but I am seriously thinking about it. Its either going to be the army or the navy. If I join the army I want to be a paratrooper. Are there any special qualifications in order to become a paratrooper? Is there a special security clearance in order to become one?

You just have to be in good physical condition. If you make it through Infantry OSUT you ought to be able to get through Airborne School without any great difficulty other than having to throw your body out of an airplane at 1250' of altitude. No problem.

When you see a Recruiter you have to get an Option 4 contract. For instance -if tou want to be Airborne Infantry you'll need an 11X option 4 contract.

You won't need any special security clearance.

As long as you get "Option 4" in your contract. That'll get you the three week Basic Airborne Training after AIT.

For instance if you want to be a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic, MOS 63W your contract should read "63W Option 4".

Stick to your decision. Don't let the Recruiter or MEPS Counselor tell you that Airborne recruiters will come by your AIT looking for volunteers to fill up their class. It's possible, but more likely in Infantry School or some of the other Combat Arms schools if it's going to happen at all.

Get it in writing in your contract or there's a very strong possibility it won't happen at all until it's time to reenlist as an added incentive.

Just keep in mind even with infantry and airborne training it doesnt guarentee you'll get put in a actual paratrooper unit. I just got done talking to my recruiter about this, who happens to be former airborne. Its apparently a highly wanted postition, and only a small number actually get sent to one. Most will end up in a normal infantry unit. according to him your best chance at getting it is to be in the top of your class for everything and even thats no guarentee.
