Default Questions about Korea

Hello everybody!

My husband has been selected for promotion to E8. We are currently stationed in Germany, I am German and it will be time for us to move, soon. We are considering to volunteer for a Korea accompanied tour. We have lots of questions about the military families living in Korea.

Can we take all our household goods? (are there any restrictions?)
Are we allowed to take our pets (4 cats) with us?
Are we authorized to have 2 cars there?
Would you recommend Korea for an accompanied tour and why?
What are most communitys like for children? Is it safe?
How often do you get to enjoy travelling in and arround Korea?
Do soldiers deploy often?
What is on post family housing compare to off post family housing like?

This will be my first PCS move and I am very concerned. So if anyone can provide us informations on personal thoughts and recommendations on Korea, it will be really appreciated.

Thanks!
Nadine

Can we take all our household goods? (are there any restrictions?) Yes, you can take your household good with you although their housing is much smaller and you may be asked to leave larger items in storage.
Are we allowed to take our pets (4 cats) with us? There are restrictions on how many animals you can have, I believe it is two.
Are we authorized to have 2 cars there? The Army will ship one and if you choose to take the other it will be at your expense.
Would you recommend Korea for an accompanied tour and why? We spent 2 1/2 years in Korea and loved it. We were both Soldiers and we had our two oldest at the time. It was a great time and we got to see all of the country.
What are most communitys like for children? Is it safe? Koreans love their children and will love yours as well. The crime rate is pretty low compared to the U.S.
How often do you get to enjoy travelling in and arround Korea? We went all over Korea, traveling was rather inexpensive and just a train ride away. We went to amusement parks, rock climbing and even took some inexpensive hops to surrounding islands and even Japan.
Do soldiers deploy often? Korea is already forward deployed since technically they are still a country at war. They did deploy a battalion early on to Iraq but currently they are not doing that. That can always change but typically they don't mess with Soldiers in Korea (remember I said typically, there are always exceptions).
What is on post family housing compare to off post family housing like? They have really built up family housing over there and for the most part it is very nice. You want want to live on post as your first choice and that is the Army choice for you because rates off post cost more for the government. Plus you have to deal with the local people and the language barrier can cause problems. But I had many friends who lived off post and loved it.

This will be my first PCS move and I am very concerned. So if anyone can provide us informations on personal thoughts and recommendations on Korea, it will be really appreciated.

Thanks!
Nadine
Good luck with your choice!
