Default Old 3acr scout

Sorry to hear you wont be able to go to the box with your buddies!! My old unit is going to Afghanistan soon and I really wish I could go with them. Sucks to know they are going and you arent. I was with the 3rd ACR when it was still at Bliss in 1985-1986. I loved being in the Cav but after 9 years of being a Scout I reclassed into Military Intel. That Cav Scout stuff was a young mans game!!!

Default Mos??

What is your MOS? I was in the thundering third back when it was at Ft. Bliss. Loved every minute of it. MSG Glenn doesnt seem to think that a 19D is part of the real Army according to his post(just kidding MSG.) I spent 2 years at Bliss then went to Polk and spent 3 years there as part of an air mobile recon team. Wish I was still physically able to do it I would be in the box right now . SCOUTS OUT!!! MEDIC UP!!!

I'm only teed off that the MEPS counselor & his Recruiter tried to make my son a 19D when he wanted Airborne Infantry preferably with a Ranger contract. There were no slots available for Infantry OSUT until two months later. That happened to several other guys I knew, too. It's a great MOS when it's being utilized with Armor or Cavalry & there is certainly nothing wrong with it. At this time in this war many 19Ds are not being used in their MOS. I remember the time when they were also being used as scouts for Infantry units but somewhere along the line Ft. Knox & Ft. Benning had a disagreement on the scout's training & job description. Infantry started their own scout program & used 11Bs with additional training for their purposes. Many 19Ds that were working with Infantry liked their duties so they reclassified to 11B scouts & were an asset to any Infanty unit. They knew their job & did it well.

Every gate guard at my son's compound in Iraq was a 19D. An important job but all of the 19Ds were really fed up doing that. They wanted to act as scouts but there was no work for them. That tells me that the MOS is being under-utilized. My son knows of at least three 19Ds that reclassified to 11B.

Your absolutely right on target with your assessment MSG. I was a Medic attached to a field Artillary unit. We were deployed to the Box in Nov. of 05. The entire train up for my unit was detainee ops and convoy security. Luckily they were not forced to do gate guard, we had a detachment of Marines at the FOB who took care of that. My unit got sent to ABU GHARIB and were forced to be prison guards for all the "non-combatents" As luck would have it the Geneva Convention prohibits Medics preforming "detainee duty" except for providing them medical care. I spent every waking moment on Medic Convoy Support or "Con-Air" missions. The Army is using many MOS's that currently have no mission in Iraq or Afghanistan as troops for all types of ancillary crap.

I had seen on TV over a year ago that a few FA & ADA units were going to be trained to patrol Iraqi streets in several cities. During the interview the Commanding General ( I think it might have been GEN Petraeus) offered these ARTY commanders anything they wanted or needed. One of them said that if they were going to do Infantry-type work send me some Infantrymen to train my men because when it comes to this type of work they really know their job well & I want my men to be as safe as possible. The GEN said "Done. I'll give you all you need. You've shown sound judgement".

Sometime let me tell you what my son said about the Marine gate guards he came in contact with. I'll check with him to make sure I'm not violating OPSEC . Scary.
