Are you able to get lasik eye surgery? And is so, what are the limitations after the surgery in terms of training and units?

If you get eye surgery before enlisting you'll have to wait, I think a year but possibly 6 months, before you're allowed in.

While in the Army you might be able to get it done but Special Operations has priority.

They are offering the surgery both Lasik and PRK to ALL Soldiers. Granted at any installation Special Operations and other Combat MOS's always have first priority, it's much easier to get the surgery done regardless of MOS.

There are restrictions however with the Lasik for instance no Airborne and maybe even some Flight status. But PRK and Lasik are different and have different restrictions.

So if I am in the Rangers, I will be able to get it? I am thinking of the negatives for having glasses in combat and that sort of thing. Plus, considering the heal time for the surgery is very quick. From my understanding, a couple of days. But I also could be wrong,

You should be offered it if you are in a Ranger Battalion.

Believe it or not glasses don't really have a negative impact in combat many Soldiers manage just fine but the surgery does make things a bit easier.

As far as the healing time that is individually based. Depending on whether you receive the lasik or the PRK, your recovery time is a bit longer then a couple days since you have light sensitivity for a while and you are limited from lifting and running for a couple weeks. The pain factor itself is dependent on the person. My husband had the PRK done and after the first day didn't experience pain, mostly felt like he had sand in his eyes. But I've known others who were in pain for a few days afterwords.
