Default Ft. Knox Graduation

Hi -- I'm a Mom of a brand new recruit doing his basic training at Ft. Knox. His family day is March 26 and graduation is March 27. Has anyone gone through this before? We haven't received any "official" notification -- he was just able to tell his girlfriend really quickly when he had 5 seconds with her on the phone. My husband and I want to book a flight and wonder if we can fly home the same day as graduation or would it be better to just plan to stay over that night? Also, I am trying to find a hotel room and don't seem to be getting anywhere - does anyone know of any hotels in that area that might have a vacancy?

Thanks in advance!!!

Graduation is a great and memorable day for your Soldier. Soldiers will send home a two page letter and a map of information on location and time of their graduation. Graduation location for the Basic Combat Training Course occurs at Sadowski Field House from October to May and summer graduations on Brooks Field.

A packet(graduation letter and map) should be mailed out a 3-4 weeks ahead of Graduation with all the info needed.

Smile Thanks!

Thanks for such a quick and informative answer! I can't wait to see him -- I hear he's pretty buff by now and working on an Ironman?? I am not sure if that's the right term for it. At any rate, I know for a fact I will need to arm wrestle his girlfriend for the first hug. Thanks again for your help!

Default Re: Ft. Knox Graduation

Hi Marybeth,

My brother is graduating BCT on March 19th from Ft. Knox. I just received the official graduation information last week and it details family day/graduation day procedures and policies which seem to differ from the website posting that I had been basing my travel plans on as well.

In my brother's case (and it may be different for your son), the grad letter states that family day and graduation day are both on March 19th. I am flying in on the 18th and leaving the morning of the 20th to be sure that I have any family day/day pass covered.

I was able to book a hotel in Elizabethtown which is 10 miles South of the base. Hotels in Ft. Knox and Radcliffe were booked solid.

You should receive a graduation letter as well - they say it comes 3-4 weeks prior to his graduation - mine was a tad bit late but it could have been from all of the weather problems they were having in February - not sure.

I hope this helps a bit. You can also call the Sergeant or point of contact for your son's company (my brother is in Charlie) and ask specific questions if it is still unclear.

Vasiya

Elizabethtown is about 20 miles south and west of Ft. Knox. It is realistically a 40 min to an hour drive depending on traffic. Try booking rooms in Muldraugh or Brandenburg Ky also Valley Station (a suburb of Louisville) is about as close as E-town.
If you come from E-town, use the Wilson Rd gate, it will be faster and a lot more direct. Regardless, when coming thru any of the gates, make sure you have I.D. for everyone in the car. They do pull random inspections on cars, so don't be surprised if you get picked. They are polite, but don't really have a sense of humor. DON"T HURRY THEM! At least the machine guns (.50 cal) are gone now.
Make the most of your day, there isn't much to do in Radcliff or E-town except eat. Hodgenville Ky is not to far, that is the birthplace of Abe Lincoln and with his 200th B-day coming, they're geared up for that.
Find the post MWR, they will have all kinds of info with things to do. They usually have a lot of freebies for some of the local attractions.
If you still want to eat, there is a killer BBQ joint in E-town near I-65 and a great place called the Doe Run Inn in Brandenburg. They're also tons of great places in Louisville. Just don't come all that way to eat at Burger King.
If you can't leave post, then it gets pretty boring. You can always go to the Patton Museum, there is a place to eat called Gallota's, there's the Rocker Inn and the Brick mess. Personally I think they're ok in a pinch, just doctored up mess hall food.

Smile Thanks All

We got the letter and the info. It looks like he will be allowed off post for family day (Thursday) and will need to be back by 7:00 PM. I can't wait to see him!

Out of our seven children, this one was the least motivated. I am LOVING seeing his enthusiasm and energy when it comes to the military. I guess it's just a good fit for him, so this will indeed be a happy day for us all!

Thank you again for your input!
