I was lucky enough to handle and fire it, and I will tell you, nothing compares. I've shot AR-15s galore and got my hands on M4s and M16s as well. But the 416 is the best pound for pound rifle I have ever fired.

The 700 is a venerable piece that is always a pleasure, always willing, and always accurate. It may be the best made purpose-built rifle ever, but the 416/417 family can do so much.

The direct impingement is second class to the proprietary gas system. Plus the cold-forged barrel can take abuse like nothing else in the world, and the bolt assembly is smoother than a baby's bottom.

I'm really looking forward to my trip to Italy next week. I'm going to the Beretta factory to talk to the gunsmith who made my shotgun. Pretty sweet, huh?
