Default Hello- Swore in yesterday.

New to this forum. I swore in yesterday at St. Louis Meps for the Army Reserves.
Earliest ship date I could get was Oct. 7, to Fort Leonardwood (OSUT) I was hoping to leave sooner but there were very few jobs and slots open. The M.O.S. I chose is 21C Bridge Crew Member. I will be thirty years old in seven days and feel as I have never wanted it more.
MEPS was quite an experiance. Glad the first step is over and can't wait to ship. I'm looking to talk to people who have worked this MOS or are going in for the same. Also looking to get an idea of how many "older recruits" are taking the plunge as well.
Thanks for reading. I am open to any constructive opinions or advise.

Welcome & congratulations!

I can't say I ever knowingly met a 21C. Is the Reserve unit you're going in an Engineer unit?
I guess I never realized there was such an MOS.

This is a real bad time to enlist in the Army. Be glad you're going as early as October. My son had to wait until Christmas time to even get the contract he wanted for a departure date of 29 Jan five years ago. So many don't realize that you can enlist in fall or winter & go into the Delayed Entry Program for up to a year, certainly after graduation if they're still in school.

Good luck.

I am warming up to the idea of a later ship date. I will use the time to PT and prepare.
I am to report to 739 Engineer Co within ten days and will begin to drill until shipping. I am admittedly still a bit ignorant to the process and wont pretend to be an Army Expert now just because I have enlisted. I am however, most excited and eager to learn. Any advise and support will be taken and appriciated.
It is my understanding as a 21C I will have the oppurtunity to be cross trained in some aspects of 21b Combat Engineer MOS. I hope this to be true as I want to learn as much as I possibly can. I have come to the conclusion that the Army will use me as the tool the see me most fit for and I am open to the idea of that. I really just want to serve.
Thanks for the support.

Thank You! St. Louis doesn't change much, unless you count unemployment, crime rate, and AB ownership. lol Still love to call it home. Go cards.

I was thinking along the same lines about cross training to 21B. I don't think there are a lot of bridges in Iraq & Afghanistan that will need someone to open them. But many times at the beginning of conflicts bridges are destroyed to limit the enemy's mobility. Those would have to be repaired or rebuilt for occupation or to bring the area back to normalcy.

Now maybe a bridge builder would make a little more sense in today's conflicts but I think even that is pushing it.
