Okay, to be more specific: No income tax is deducted from the Swiss Guard's salary. The Vatican does not levy income tax and the Swiss Guards are exempt from Swiss income tax for the duration of their service in the PSG.
The motto translates as: "Always forward, never retreat"

the amount of the "solde" of french soldiers is definetly the highest.
it's cultural, wages in france even for the basic worker is high 1217 € for 35 hours per month.
it's the legal minimum for any person who work.
Soldiers are not at 35 hours (the legal work duration in france) but are better paid than the minimum.

yeah well, as far as i know, people generally dont join the Forces for the money, despite the fact that its usually pretty bloody good pay.
As for hours per week, Australian minimumis 40 hour week in most industries, 9-5 five days a week, plus overtime. Minimum casual wages differ from industry to industry, the lowest being $12 an hour for +18 years old Jackaroo (thats Aussie lingo for 'young man who works on Sheep/Cattle Property).
Back to the Defence Forces, they work no standard week. In all the job descriptions they make specific note of long, irregular hours, often working 24 hours straight (unless you're in Speical Infantry Forces, in which case you DONT sleep), without compensating pay.
Like i said, most poeple dont join the forces for money.
P.S. Aquinas: Beutez en Evant; my familes motto, Normandy French for 'Press on Forward' or some such saying.

taxes? taxes you say? at 15 % ? what are you crying about?
if you earn over about 45000 dollars in a year in australia, you get taxed at about 47%
and that is just income tax, tqaken out from your pay.
as that other guy said before on top of that there is gst when you but **** and an exise tax
on petrol and such and all, so condsider your self lucky only paying 15 %
although i am a student and dont have an income, so i pay 0 %in tax

(feeling a need to correct again.. )
Accomodation isn't paid for by the MOD - it is subsidised, as is food for single soldiers.
And the pay ****? Well - my salary last year was just over £30,000 for a Corporal (US Sgt/SSGt equiv) (including 6 month detachment/LSSA Bonus and 8 year bonus).
Bear in mind we pay tax on operations though.
